Playing the Lottery in a syndicate

I have been playing the lottery in the UK since it started. The first Saturday draw was on 19th November 1994 and a midweek draw was introduced on 5th February 1997.

I play 3 lines (£1 a line) each Saturday and the same 3 each Wednesday. I am therefore spending £6 per week on the National Lottery and since it started have spent £3,807 and won about £500 at the most. These winnings are normally made up from the lowest prize of 3 numbers from 6 which wins £10. This is not a good return but I keep plugging away in the hope that all 6 numbers will come in and I will win the jackpot.

The prizes have got smaller since the early days of the lottery as it appears most people have decided that the chances of winning are too slim. The Saturday Jackpot started at around £8 million and when the midweek draw was started that prize was usually £4 million (prizes based on number of tickets sold). Today you are lucky to get £4.5 million for a Saturday and £2.5 million for Wednesday.

To enhance my chances of winning the jackpot I entered a syndicate at work. There were 10 of us in it and we all picked a line and paid £1 each which gave me 10 more chances of winning. Again this proved fruitless and winnings to spending ratio was too low.

In April 2006 I came across this internet based lottery syndicate called e-lottery and joined straight away.

They have syndicates in the National Lottery and also the Euromillions lottery which has a minimum jackpot of £10 million every Friday.

An entry in to either lottery costs £5 per week and provides you with 88 lines in the National Lottery (44 on wednesday and 44 on Saturday)or 36 lines in the Euromillions (normally £1.50 per line).

For the National Lottery (49 numbers)you are in a syndicate of 49 people and have a line of 5 numbers and one guaranteed number which is basically the other 44 numbers (hence 44 lines received) Lets say your 5 numbers are 1,2,3,4,5 and the sixth number will be any number from 6-49. This means you are guaranteed 1 number before the draw is even made. So you will win if you match 2 of the 5 numbers as you will then have 3 numbers in total. This will actually win 4 lines (if numbers drawn are 4,5,6,7,8 and 9 you have 4 and 5 and the star will then be 6,7,8 and 9 giving 4 winning lines of 4,5,6 and 4,5,7 and 4,5,8 and 4,5,9) 4 lines at £10 each will win £40 but this is then divided by 49 players in the syndicate so you will only win £0.83. However if you had only matched 2 numbers on your own you would win nothing.

The prizes are therefore lower but the chances of winning the jackpot are increased by 702% (1 in 14 million chance playing normally and 1 in 1.9 million using e-lottery) If the syndicate won a jackpot of £4.9 million you would pick up £100,000. But, you would also pick up smaller prizes as well as you hold 44 tickets you would win 44 prizes. 1 jackpot (6 balls), 1 x 5 balls plus bonus ball and 42 x 5 balls.

Don't forget you get 44 lines on the Saturday and Wednesday draw for £5.

I play both lotteries but prefer the Euromillions as the prize is higher (minimum £10 million) and for my £5 I get 36 lines each Friday.

The Euromillions is different to the National Lottery as you have to pick 5 numbers between 1 and 50 and then 2 bonus numbers from 1 to 9. All 7 numbers have to be matched to win the Jackpot. The syndicate has 5 numbers and are guaranteed the 2 star numbers which gives 36 lines. This increases chances of winning jackpot by 3600%. You are in a syndicate of 39 people so if you won the jackpot of £10 million you would receive £256,410 as your share. Don't forget you would also win 14 lines of 5 numbers plus 1 star number and 21 lines of 5 numbers and no star numbers so 36 winning lines.

The added benefit of joining e-lottery is that for £4.99 per year you can become an associate. As an associate you introduce other people to play and for every £5 line you will receive £1 towards your line. So, if you introduce 5 players who play for £5 per week you will effectively play for free. The more players you get the more free lines you can take or you can take the money its up to you.

The syndicates are open to anyone anywhere in the world.
