West Ham United FC West Ham United FC were formed in 1895 and originally called Thames Ironworks (the team was founded by the owner of Thames Ironworks). In 1900 they changed their name to West Ham United FC with the nickname the Hammers. The club badge depicts two crossed hammers (as these were used in the Ironworks) over a castle as there was previously a castle on the site of the ground. The team currently play in the English Premier League having been promoted in 2005 after a 3 year absence. The manager is Alan Curbishley who was previously a player with West Ham from 1976-1979 having been brought through the famous Youth Academy. Many great players have come through the Academy including Trevor Brooking, Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst, Martin Peters, Tony Cottee, Mark Noble to name a few. It is a common fact between West Ham fans that the club won the World Cup in 1966 as Bobby Moore was captain, Geoff Hurst scored a hat trick in the final (the only one in history) and Martin Peters scored the fourth goal in the final during the 4-2 win over West Germany. As all three players were at that time regulars in the Hammers line up the World Cup was won by West Ham. The club appeared in the first FA Cup Final held at Wembley in 1923 (known as the white horse final) when in excess of 150,000 fans watched the game. West Ham lost 2-0 to Bolton. They have appeared in 5 finals in total winning 3 1923 lost to Bolton Wanderers 0-2 1964 beat Preston North End 3-2 1975 beat Fulham 2-0 1980 beat Arsenal 1-0 (last lower league club to win trophy) 2006 lost to Liverpool 3-3 (lost 1-3 on penalties) I am a season ticket holder in the Centenary Upper stand. My first match was with my Dad and Grandad on 01/01/1974 when we played Norwich City and won 4-2. A never to be forgotten afternoon standing on a box in the North Bank cheering the claret and blue colours on and singing the famous anthem 2I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles"
